Abuja, Nigeria – May 8, 2025 – A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has admitted into evidence several documents and electronic materials presented by the prosecution against Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The court’s ruling marks a significant development in the ongoing treasonable felony trial.

Justice Binta Nyako, presiding over the case, overruled objections from Kanu’s defense team, which had challenged the admissibility of the materials on grounds of procedural irregularities and alleged violation of the defendant’s rights. The admitted evidence includes video recordings of alleged inciting broadcasts, digital communications, and official reports by security agencies.

The prosecution, led by the Director of Public Prosecutions, argued that the materials directly link Kanu to a campaign aimed at destabilizing the Nigerian state and inciting violence in the South-East region. According to the prosecution, the evidence supports the charges of treasonable felony, terrorism, and unlawful possession of arms brought against the separatist leader.

In response, Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, maintained that the materials were obtained in violation of Kanu’s constitutional rights, particularly during his arrest and extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in 2021. The defense is expected to appeal the court’s ruling on admissibility.

The court adjourned the trial to a later date for the continuation of hearing, during which the prosecution is expected to call additional witnesses. Outside the court, supporters of Kanu gathered peacefully, demanding his release and chanting pro-Biafra slogans.

Nnamdi Kanu has remained in custody since his re-arrest and rendition, despite multiple legal efforts to secure bail. His trial continues to generate both domestic and international attention, given its political and ethnic implications.
